AbhyangA
Ayurvedic Massage
Abhyanga is a deeply nourishing Ayurvedic massage that honours the body's natural wisdom and supports whole-body health and wellbeing. Originating from the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, this traditional oil massage is considered one of the most important practices for maintaining balance, vitality, and longevity.
Using warm, herb-infused medicated oils chosen specifically for your individual needs, Abhyanga works to detoxify, replenish the tissues, and soothe the nervous system. The rhythmic application of oil and gentle flowing strokes encourage the body to soften into a state of deep rest, allowing its innate healing processes to activate. More than simply a massage, Abhyanga is a therapeutic ritual designed to restore harmony between body, mind, and spirit.
In Ayurveda, health is understood as a dynamic state of balance between the body's unique constitution, the environment, and the natural rhythms of life. Stress, overstimulation, emotional strain, irregular routines, seasonal changes, and lifestyle factors can all create imbalance within the system. Abhyanga seeks to gently guide the body back towards equilibrium by nourishing the tissues, calming excess activity within the nervous system, and supporting the free flow of energy throughout the body.
The warm oils used during treatment are considered an essential medicine within Ayurveda. Carefully selected according to your constitution and current state of balance, these oils are traditionally used to penetrate deeply into the tissues, helping to lubricate the joints, soften the muscles, nourish the skin, and support healthy circulation. The oils also act as a grounding medium, helping to calm an overactive mind, ease feelings of anxiety or depletion, and create a sense of steadiness and connection within the body.
Abhyanga works gently with the lymphatic system—supporting the body's natural detoxification pathways, enhancing immune function, reducing stagnation, and promoting overall vitality. The flowing strokes help encourage healthy circulation of both blood and lymph, assisting the body in the removal of metabolic waste (ama) while delivering nourishment to the tissues.
Throughout the treatment, specific marma points are also lightly stimulated. Marma points are considered vital energy centres where prana, or life-force energy, gathers within the body. Similar to acupressure points in Traditional Chinese Medicine, these subtle energetic gateways are believed to influence both physical and emotional wellbeing. Gentle stimulation of marma points may help release areas of physical tension, emotional holding, or energetic stagnation, encouraging greater flow, balance, and vitality throughout the system.
By attuning to your unique constitution and the rhythms of nature, Abhyanga invites you back to your body's original state of balance, vitality, and ease. It is a practice of nourishment, restoration, and remembrance—a gentle return to the wisdom that already exists within.
Many clients experience Abhyanga as profoundly grounding, nurturing, and restorative. The combination of warm oil, rhythmic movement, and therapeutic touch often creates a deep sense of safety and relaxation, allowing the body to move from a state of stress and vigilance into one of rest, repair, and renewal. It can be particularly supportive during periods of exhaustion, overwhelm, transition, burnout, grief, recovery, or whenever life feels demanding and depleting.
While every treatment is tailored to the individual, common benefits associated with Abhyanga may include:
Deep relaxation and nervous system regulation
Reduced stress, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm
Improved circulation and lymphatic flow
Support for healthy detoxification processes
Enhanced sleep quality
Relief from muscular tension and stiffness

Increased energy, vitality, and resilience
