Experience the benefits of acupuncture
“Modern research has demonstrated acupuncture's effects on the nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. By stimulating the body's various systems, acupuncture can help to resolve pain, and improve sleep, digestive function, and sense of well-being.” - UC San Diego School of Medicine
So what is Acupuncture all about?
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy, which is based on an ancient philosophy that describes the universe, and the body, in terms of two opposing forces: yin and yang. In TCM theory, balancing these energies brings to body into health & harmony. Energy, called "qi" (pronounced "chee") in TCM, flows along specific pathways in our bodies, known as meridians, and a constant flow of energy in these pathways keeps our yin and yang balanced. However, if the flow of energy gets blocked, due to injury, tension, stress, etc, the disruption can lead to pain, lack of function, or illness. Acupuncture therapy can release blocked qi in the body and stimulate function, evoking the body’s natural healing response through various physiological systems.
How does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites; commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or “acupoints”. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles into the skin.
Other acupoint stimulation techniques used can include: massage, heat therapy, cupping, gua sha and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments. Geraldine has also recently acquired a Laser Acupuncture tool, which is fabulous for those that don’t like or can’t tolerate needles. It is beneficial for areas of high pain or sensitivity, and for use on children.
What happens in an Acupuncture session?
In your initial consultation, you will first discuss your health history with Geraldine. Then she may examine your eyes, your tongue’s shape, color, and coating, feel your pulse, and possibly perform some additional physical examinations depending on your individual health needs. Using these assessment tools, she will be able to recommend a proper treatment plan to address your particular condition. During the acupuncture treatment, you lay comfortably on a treatment table while precise acupoints are stimulated on various areas of your body. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed in points specific to your individual needs. The needles are usually left in place between five and 30 minutes. People often report feeling very relaxed during and after treatments, as acupuncture can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to sink into a deep rest state.
